Questa space saga è davvero incredibile! Gli autori hanno creato un'ambientazione complessa e dettagliata che coinvolge un intero sistema solare ed oltre, con tanto di equilibri politici e distinzioni culturali... per me è anche importante che non vi siano sezioni stipate di dettagli noiosi solo per riempire pagine ma le diverse situazioni, i vari personaggi ed in generale l'intero sistema coi suoi dettagli si sviluppano con i giusti tempi. Finora è tutto assolutamente coinvolgente.

Quante volte capita leggendo un romanzo di chiedersi cosa ne è stato di qualche personaggio secondario? O di rendersi conto che per quanto la trama di un sequel sia ben congeniata, qualche meccanismo resta oscuro?
Ebbene, tutte questi romanzi brevi che fanno da contorno alla trama centrale di The Expanse hanno il pregio di dare risposte, di aprire finestre su percorsi collaterali che si dimostrano altrettanto interessanti. In particolare “The vital abyss” si muove tra gli scienziati prigionieri della Protogen dopo i fatti di Eros. Attraverso le vicende di uno di loro, presenti e passate, gli autori ci conducono attraverso le scelte di vita e di lavoro fino alla perdita di quell’innocenza che spesso caratterizza le vie della scienza. Fino a un'inattesa opzione.

Ho affrontato questo breve romanzo immediatamente dopo aver ultimato il quinto libro della serie, Nemesis Games (2015) e mi sento caldamente di consigliarvelo se non avete problemi a leggere in inglese, poiché narra una storia che fa da collante tra gli eventi del primo libro e la fine del quinto, consentendo di fare chiarezza su alcune dinamiche non approfondite nella storia principale. Mi rendo conto che non si capisca molto da quanto ho scritto ma non voglio svelare nulla della trama per non rovinarvela.

Riporto infine l'ordine di lettura consigliato per chi volesse affrontare questa bella space opera, che altro non è che l'ordine di pubblicazione. I numeri interi sono i libri principali, i numeri con i decimali sono le short novel: sono presentati nell'ordine di lettura consigliato, anche se talvolta le short novel sono collocate nel passato rispetto ai libri che le precedono, come indicato dai numeri che le contraddistinguono.

This one is real something else. You'd never guess who the main character is. But the way they played the character is really masterful! Lots of science. Hard sci-fi at its bestest.

Fantastic short story but very dark

This story definitely shows the depravity and depths a sociopath or psychopath will achieve and not even understand anything they did was wrong, just necessary. It was very well written and it was interesting to have it switch perspective from current to the past and back.

These are some of the best and brightest minds, but also ones that have had their filters and remorse removed. It starts to make you understand how such a thing could happen if we had such expertise.

I had always wondered how the scientists from Protogen could have done what they did. Humans typically aren’t that cold and hard about facts, especially if you have many others working at the same thing. Knowing that each of them had undergone a form of spiritual lobotomy, certainly explains how it came to be though.

The authors did a remarkable job of commenting on human nature and the ways it impacts us, or doesn’t as the case may be. All of it started with one businessman with a detached sense of right or wrong and after the first person gets the ‘treatment’ it becomes so much easier to have an entire company running the same way soon after.

Hopefully we as a society will never have this happen, but sadly I think it’s likely it will. I can hope that it won’t be so pervasive or damaging when it does though and someone somewhere finds a way to stop it.

Interessante Kurzgeschichte aus dem Expanse-Universum, die ein wenig mehr Licht in dunkle Kapitel der Serie bringt. Für Fans der Serie ein muss.

Intriguing and fills the gaps

An intriguing addition to the Expanse universe, bridging the gap between books 1 and 3, and then some (no spoliers in this review!).
An exploration of imprisonment, ethics in science and human morals, this novella is at first a bit difficult to get into but it slowly opens up significantly, especially in light of the later books in the main series.

After reading, you’ll be set to dive into the main story with a better vantage point. And appreciate certain background characters and get a very vague idea of what is to come in Book 6.
